Change of paradigm in China:
From copy-paste to technology creation
China now has more than 80 science and technology parks spread around the country. Universities have been expanded. More and more Chinese companies, both public and private, invest in R&D. The ratio of R&D expenditures to GNP rose from 0.5% to more than 2%. Some islands of global expertise are emerging. The combined effect of these driving forces has considerably changed the picture of technological innovation in China. While China was not on the R&D map ten years ago, it is now one of the world focal points. Such changes have a tremendous impact on foreign companies. This study investigates a large set of foreign companies investing in R&D in China (including Schneider Electric, Orange Labs, L’Oréal, ST Ericsson, Kudelski, IBM, Alcatel, Rhodia, Roche and Novartis).
